We keep free-range chickens for eggs. Originally they were free to go wherever they wanted to. One even came into Jack’s office everyday to lay her egg behind his computer. Unfortunately the local hawk population got the word and set up camp on Black Sheep Hill. Now our chickens live in a large part of the sheep pasture but are securely enclosed. We keep a variety of breeds: Araucanas (they are the ones that lay blue eggs), Buff Orpingtons, Giant Blacks and a few of unidentified heritage. The most important criterion is that they are good winter layers, and all of these breeds are.
